Awareness vs. Immediate help- Will or does the amount of awareness brought by visual news justify not helping a victim? Is being killed to help someone who will die anyway a chance to take? Is losing a job and a life a risk to maybe possibly save one, or is being alive and maybe possibly raising huge awareness more helpful?(photo 1&2)
Is avoiding being involved in a situation a good policy?- In court jury members can not be biased but it is true that they can become so, as can journalists with their topics. If a company said to stay out of it would you-could you!? Can a reporter, news crew, photographer, or any member of press effectively bring awareness without being involved? OR does the bias of getting involved in the first place then make the reporting ineffective? Think of the Casey Anthony trial! Rhetoric used as a weapon is very powerful and it is not always used towards a gray opinion, media literally makes things black and white for readers. At what point does a media opinion become fact? The photographer in photo 1 was told not to pick up the child for a number of reasons, and it is possible that nothing he could have physically done other than click the camera could have helped the child or other malnourished children. But the way I displayed it out in the open that probably wasn’t a readers first opinion of the photographer, excuse the generalization but most probably decided that he was a terrible person for not doing anything. The media presents things in a way where we immediately believe them… if the media stays out of the situation will what they say ever really be true? Many media sources tell their employees NOT to get involved.
American Pride vs. American Aid- Are journalists more likely to want to be involved in a situation if this situation is closer to home, literally? An example brought up of this was the aid provided by Katrina news crews. Despite many American reporters not directly/ physically helping in some world conflicts we must remember two things: the rules presented by their employers (above), and the linguistic and cultural barriers that hinder the reporters from being able to communicate and help those in need.
Can big news outlets take the stories from smaller ones?- I have never seen credit given to the small town reporter digging up dirt. This is a note I made to research more about… The main example discussed were Casey Anthony (which due to media coverage everyone knew about and, interestingly due to the bias of the news MANY group members believed Casey was guilty).
